i. The Device

What is
SkinPen?

SkinPen is the world's first FDA cleared microneedling device. It uses fourteen precisely engineered needles to create controlled micro-channels in the skin — triggering the body's own wound-healing response and initiating new collagen and elastin production.

Unlike derma rollers or cheaper alternatives, SkinPen's patented safety mechanisms ensure consistent, precise needle depth on every pass — no tearing, no dragging, no uncontrolled injury. It's a medical-grade device. The difference is measurable. Every treatment uses a fresh, sterile cartridge that seals completely against fluid backflow — so there's none of the cross-contamination risk that cheaper microneedling pens can carry.

ii. The Mechanism

Twelve needles.
One cascade.

SkinPen's twelve needles create micro-channels at a precisely calibrated depth — between 0.5mm and 2.5mm depending on the area being treated. Each channel triggers a three-phase biological response: inflammation, proliferation, and remodelling.

01

Controlled injury

Twelve needles at consistent depth create micro-wounds — precise enough to trigger healing, shallow enough to leave the surrounding tissue intact.

02

Collagen cascade

The wound-healing response activates fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin. This is the same mechanism behind every effective skin regeneration treatment.

03

Progressive remodelling

New collagen continues forming for weeks after treatment. Results improve progressively — and compound across a course of sessions.

04

0.5mm to 2.5mm depth

Needle depth adjusts from 0.5mm to 2.5mm — calibrated per treatment zone within the same session. Delicate periorbital skin treated shallower; thicker cheek or scar tissue treated deeper. Precise. Controlled.

In Motion

Twelve needles,
one cascade.

Watch the controlled micro-channels trigger the skin’s natural repair cascade — collagen and elastin, rebuilt.

iii. The Standard

"Not all microneedling is equal."

SkinPen is the only microneedling device FDA cleared, CE marked and MHRA registered. Every other device on the market operates to a different standard. The regulatory difference is not a technicality — it's the difference between a clinical instrument and a cosmetic tool.

iv. The Difference

SkinPen vs
everything else.

The derma roller and the clinical SkinPen are not the same treatment. The mechanism is superficially similar — needles, skin — but the precision, safety, and regulatory standing are in a different category entirely.

SkinPen · Clinical
FDA cleared · CE marked · MHRA registered
Consistent needle depth — 0.1mm precision
No tearing — stamps vertically, never drags
Adjustable depth per zone within one session
Sterile, single-use cartridge every time
Clinically proven in peer-reviewed trials
Derma rollers / lesser devices
No equivalent regulatory clearance
Variable and inconsistent needle depth
Rolling motion tears rather than stamps
Fixed depth — same across all zones
Reusable cartridges — contamination risk
Limited or no clinical evidence base

Good to Know

Questions, answered.

Is the treatment painful?
A numbing cream is applied first, so most clients feel only light pressure and vibration. It stays comfortable throughout.
Is there any downtime?
Mild redness for around 24 to 48 hours, similar to light sun exposure. Makeup can be worn after 24 hours.
When will I see results?
Skin looks fresher and smoother within a week, with collagen continuing to build over four to six weeks — best across a course.
How many sessions will I need?
Typically a course of three to six, spaced four to six weeks apart.
What does it treat?
Texture, scarring, fine lines, pigmentation and overall skin quality.
Before & Aftercare

Everything you need to know.

SkinPen is a medical microneedling treatment, so there's a little more to it than a facial. Here's who it suits, when to check with me first, and how to look after your skin afterwards.

Is it right for you?

SkinPen suits most skin types and tones, and works across scarring, fine lines, pigmentation and texture. Because microneedling works by creating a controlled healing response in the skin, there are a few times when we'd plan around it. Please let me know before your appointment if any of these apply:

  • You're pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have an active cold sore, skin infection or broken skin in the area
  • You have an active flare of eczema, psoriasis or rosacea where we'd be treating
  • You have active, inflamed acne in the treatment area
  • You have a history of keloid or raised (hypertrophic) scarring
  • You take blood-thinning medication, or have a bleeding or clotting disorder
  • You've taken Roaccutane (isotretinoin) in the last six months
  • You're having chemotherapy or radiotherapy, or have a condition that affects healing
  • You've had an injectable treatment in the area recently — we'll simply time it right

None of these are necessarily a no. Most just mean we time things differently, or check with your GP first. If you're not sure, ask me.

Aftercare

Your skin may feel warm and look a little flushed, like mild sunburn — this is completely normal and usually settles within 24 to 48 hours. To get the most from your treatment and let the skin heal cleanly:

  • For the first 24 hours, leave the skin bare — no makeup
  • Only touch your face with clean hands, and use the gentle products I recommend
  • Pause active skincare — retinol, acids, vitamin C and exfoliants — for three to five days
  • No gym, sweating, saunas, steam rooms or hot showers for 24 to 48 hours
  • No swimming for 48 hours
  • Stay out of direct sun, and wear SPF every day once the skin has settled
  • Let any light flaking shed on its own — don't pick or scratch
  • Drink plenty of water and keep the skin well hydrated

If anything feels unexpected in the days after, message me — I'd always rather you asked.
